Managing Tiers

Tiers can define placement, read and write performance (bandwidth, IOPS and latency), and protection requirements (durability and availability) for data. A priority level can be set which is used in the event of resource contention and a cost per capacity can be defined and then used by the Data Profiler to help visualize saving. (Cost is only applicable to the Data Profiler functionality.)

Creating a Tier

  1. Select Objectives & Tiers from the left navigation bar.
  2. Select the Tiers tab.
  3. Select Create Tier.
  4. Select Create New.

  5. Enter a Name, and an optional Description and optional Cost Per unit.
  6. Click Next Step.

  7. Select Data Placement.

By selecting a storage system or a storage volume for place-on or exclude-from, the system is specifically instructed to take action when the tier is applied.

  8. (Optional) Define the Performance requirements. This step is configured when specifically using the integrated telemetry to automatically let the product move data between different performance tiers.
  9. Use the text boxes or slider bars to set the required performance levels. Decimal points can be used to define specific requirements such as 10.5 MB/s and 0.1 ms.

    • Read Bandwidth: Minimum megabytes per second.
    • Read IOPS: Minimum thousands (K) of IOPs per second.
    • Read Latency: Maximum milliseconds.
    • Write Bandwidth: Minimum megabytes per second.
    • Write IOPS: Minimum thousands (K) of IOPs per second.
    • Write Latency: Maximum milliseconds.
  10. Click Next Step to move to the next section and save the input on this page.
  11. (Optional) Define the Protection requirements: Durability, Availability, Priority, and whether an Online Delay is allowed.
    • Durability Specify the Durability requirement between one and nine “9s” .
    • Availability Specify the Availability requirement between one and nine “9s”1.
    • Priority Define priority from Low to High priority. DataCore vFilO uses this value to decide which data to protect if there are resource constraints.
    • Online Delay Specify if data is allowed to be offline and the maximum delay for restoring to online.
  12. Click Next Step to move to the Preview section.
  13. Review all the information you specified.

  14. If adjustments need to be made, click on the pencil icon or the step icon for the information you want to change.
  15. Make your changes and then click Preview.
  16. When everything looks correct, click Save Tier.
