Server Message Block (SMB)
Even if a share is used only by SMB clients, the source must support exporting the data via NFS. Please see the assimilation requirements section for more details with regards to NFS access for data.
The workflow to add SMB metadata is the same as NFS only assimilation. As such, this section focuses entirely on the SMB pane as part of the assimilation workflow.
As part of the assimilation step, the appropriate SMB credentials must be presented, and the system will automatically copy all the required SMB metadata into the new share.
SMB Parameters:
- SMB Path (UNC)
A UNC-style path (e.g. \\host.example.com\Share\path\to\data) which must include the fully-qualified domain name of the SMB server from which data is being assimilated as well as the SMB share name from which data is being assimilated. It may also contain an SMB source path for cases where the SMB source path differs from the NFS path specified above in Source Path
- Username and Password
Credentials to be able to read all the SMB metadata for the data being assimilated.
It is highly recommended that credentials is from a user that is a member of the backup role. The backup role is a special role that most storage systems allow to read the metadata without interpreting it, allowing the role to copy metadata without restrictions.
- Default User and Default Group
The default user and group provide a default SID mapping in the event that a user or group SID does not have a mapping (because the account or group has been deleted in AD).
The Default User and Group settings can be used to identify Orphaned Data and map that to a place-holder user for further processing.
