Creating Protection Group and Recovery Plan

A Protection Group allows users to group virtual machines (VM) that are intended to be recovered together. The VMs can be protected either on the basis of array-based replication or vSphere Replication. After creating a Protection Group, a Recovery Plan is used to execute a sequence of steps that controls the recovery process of the protected virtual machines.

To create a protection group:

  1. Log in to the vSphere Client.
  2. Go to Site Recovery > Open Site Recovery.
  3. Click the Protection Groups option displayed at the top.
  4. Click New.

    A dialog box is displayed.
  5. Under the Name and Direction option, configure the name, description, direction, and location and click Next.
  6. Under the Type option, select the protection group type as Virtual Volume (vVol replication) and click Next.
  7. Under the Replication Groups option, select the replication group that is currently being replicated.
    • Once selected, if a VM is currently residing in that Replication group, the Site Recovery Manager (SRM) will add it to the protection group.
    • Enable the toggle bar to view the unprotected replication groups.

  8. Under the Recovery Plan option, click the applicable radio button to either add a new recovery plan or add the protection group to another recovery plan and click Next. By default, the Add to existing recovery plan option is selected.

    This is optional.

  9. Under the Ready to Complete option, review the settings and click Finish to complete the process. Verify that the Protection Group is created under the Protection Group tab.
