About Reports

A report is a "snapshot" of the configuration state at the time the report is created. Over 20 different reports are available. The report tool collects information and data from the system and presents it in a user friendly format. Filters are provided for most reports in order to fine-tune the report output and the filtering criteria is listed at the top of the report. Report data can be ordered by selecting a sortable field from a list of available sortable fields and choosing either ascending or descending order. A document map is provided for reports that are grouped by an object to quickly navigate to any object in the report. For instance, the Paths By Server Port report will have each server port bookmarked.

When a report is created, it is automatically saved locally on the machine running the SANsymphony Management Console from which it was created. Reports will be saved locally until deleted in the console. Reports can only be viewed, exported, printed, and deleted from the console of the machine from which they were created.

The reports tool is accessible from the Reports button in the Ribbon>Home tab. After a report is created, it can be "opened" or viewed in the Reports tool at any time by double-clicking the report from the report list in the tool.

Alternatively, right-click the report and select View Details to view the report

When a report is active in the workspace, the Report Actions tab appears in the Ribbon and allows additional functionality such as Find (performs a word or phrase search in the report), Document Map (provided for reports that are grouped by object, such as with the Paths By Host report), Print, and Export utilities, as well as navigation, and zoom for the displayed report.

Bookmarks in the Document Map allow quick navigation to any object in the report

Report Types

Report Name Description

Data Usage

Reports host group statistics during a specified date range. Statistics include:

  • Total Bytes Transferred
  • Total Bytes Written
  • Total Bytes Read
  • Total IO Operations
  • Total Write Operations
  • Total Read Operations
  • Data Status

The Total Bytes Provisioned is reported for time periods within the date range of the report. This information is provided per host group and the host groups can be specified. Data can be filtered by host group and the start (From) and end (To) date. Data can be reported for a time period from one day to one year.

The end date of the specified time period is included in the report. If the selected period is 09/22/2014 – 09/22/2014, a report will be created for this day - from 09/22/2014 00:00:00 to 09/23/2014 00:00:00. This report shows changes in the amount of storage space provisioned during the specified date range.

Total Bytes Provisioned is the storage space provisioned to a host group; it is the sum, in bytes, of the sizes of all virtual disks served to the host group.

  • A value of N/A in the report means that there is no recording data for the counter during the selected interval.
  • The Data Status column has three possible values: Complete, Partial, and No Data.
    • Complete status means that there was data for all counters for every day in the selected time period.
    • Partial status means that there was data for all counters for at least one day during the selected time period.
    • No Data status means that there was no data for one or all of the counters during the selected time period.
  • The Total Bytes Provisioned statistic is not cumulative, so the amount of provisioned space is shown for the time period during which it was valid. Changes in the amount of provisioned space are reflected in the report as they occurred. Therefore, each time the provisioned space changed, there will be a new entry in the Provisioned Space table.
    • A value of N/A means that there was no data during that time period because charge back was not enabled or that there was a time period lasting longer than one hours without reporting the counter data.
    • The value will be 0 GB when charge back is enabled, but no virtual disks are served to the host group.

Detailed Data Usage

Reports host group statistics for a specified host group during a specified date range. Data is provided hourly and the statistics reported include:

  • Total Bytes Transferred
  • Total Bytes Written
  • Total Bytes Read
  • Total IO Operations
  • Total Write Operations
  • Total Read Operations
  • Total Bytes Provisioned *

Data can be filtered by host group and the start (From) and end (To) date. Data can be reported for a time period from one day to one year.

The end date of the date range is included in the report. If the selected period is 09/22/2014 – 09/22/2014, a report will be created for this day - from 09/22/2014 00:00:00 to 09/23/2014 00:00:00.

* Total Bytes Provisioned is the storage space provisioned to a host group; it is the sum, in bytes, of the sizes of all virtual disks served to the host group.

  • A value of N/A in the report means that there is no recording data for the counter during the selected interval.
  • The Data Status column has three possible values: Complete, Partial, and No Data.
    • Complete status means that there was data for all counters for every day in the selected time period.
    • Partial status means that there was data for all counters for at least one day during the selected time period.
    • No Data status means that there was no data for one or all of the counters during the selected time period. This may be because charge back was no enabled for the host group.

    • A value of N/A means that there was no data during that time period because charge back was not enabled. This will be reported as an entry in the table if data has not been recorded for at least one hour.
    • The value will be 0 GB when charge back is enabled, but no virtual disks are served to the host group.

Disk Pools

Reports basic information for pools in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server. Pool information includes server, size, mode, status, available storage, amount over subscription, and usage percentage. More than one DataCore Server listed in the Server column indicates a shared disk pool.

Hosts

Reports basic information for all hosts in the local server group. Host information consists of state, operating system type, preferred server designation, multipath and ALUA setting, and the number of virtual disks served to the host.

Hosts By Group

Reports basic information for hosts in the local server group. Data can be filtered by host group. Results are organized by host group. Host information consists of state, operating system type, preferred server designation, multipath and ALUA setting, and the number of virtual disks served to the host.

Paths

Reports initiator/target pair information for front-end and mirror paths for virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server and path type. Path information includes initiator machine and port, target machine and port, LUN, virtual disk, enabled setting and state.

Paths By Host

Reports initiator/target pair information for front-end and mirror paths for served virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, host, and host group. Results are grouped by host. Path information for each host includes initiator port, target machine and port, LUN, virtual disk, enabled setting and state.

Paths By Host Port

Reports initiator/target pair information for front-end and mirror paths for served virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, host, and host group. Results are grouped by host port. Path information for each host port includes target machine and port, LUN, virtual disk, enabled setting and state.

Paths By Server

Reports initiator/target pair information for front-end and mirror paths for virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server and path type (front-end or mirror). Results are grouped by DataCore Server. Path information for each server includes target port, initiator machine and port, LUN, virtual disk, enabled setting and state.

Paths By Server Port

Reports initiator/target pair information for front-end and/or mirror paths for virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server and path type (front-end or mirror). Results are grouped by server port. Path information for each server port includes initiator machine and port, LUN, virtual disk, enabled setting and state.

Paths By Virtual Disk

Reports initiator/target pair information for front-end and/or mirror paths for virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server and  path type (front-end or mirror). Results are grouped by virtual disk. Path information for each virtual disk includes initiator machine and port, target machine and port, LUN, enabled setting and state.

Physical Disks

Reports basic information for all physical disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server and physical disk type. Information for each physical disk includes DataCore Server, name, type *, size, free space, P.B.T.L. (Port.Bus.Target.LUN) and status.

* The type Available means that the disk is not in a pool or used as a pass-through, but is available for use.

Physical Storage By Server

Reports disk and pool information for physical disks in the local server group. Disk information is grouped by server and further classified by pool, pass-through disks * and available disks. Data can be filtered by server, disk pool, and physical disk type. Pool information includes size, available storage, amount over subscription, type, status and usage percentage. A pie chart is included for a visual representation of free, reserved, and allocated pool space. Physical disk information includes size, free space, Port.Bus.Target.LUN, status, mirror state and tier.

* Pass-through section is provided if pass-through disks are in the configuration.

Port Connections

Reports remote port connection information for all server ports in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server and port type (Fibre Channel, iSCSI and/or Loopback.). Port connection information for each server port includes remote machine, remote port alias and name, state, SCSI mode, and IP/Address. (Information matches data from the Remote Ports tab in details pages.) Basic information is also provided for each server port and includes port role, SCSI mode, port type, and status.

Ports By Host

Reports port information for hosts in the local server group. Data can be filtered by host, host group, and port type (Fibre Channel, iSCSI and/or Loopback.). Results are grouped by host. Host properties and state are also included. Port information includes port alias and name, status, mode, and type.

Ports By Server

Reports port information for DataCore Servers in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server and port type (FC, iSCSI and/or Loopback.). Results are grouped by server. Port information includes port alias and name, port role, SCSI mode, type, status, and product name.

System Health

Reports the health information for resources in the local server group that have a status with a higher priority than healthy. Data can be filtered by category (Attention, Warning, and/or Critical). Health information includes resource, time of last status update, status, and the message.

Virtual Disks

Reports basic information for all virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, host, served or served/unserved virtual disks, and virtual disk type (standard, snapshots, and/or rollbacks). Virtual disk information includes size, allocated space,storage sources, storage profile, replication status, and data status. Data status includes the percentage complete and type of recovery if the virtual disk is in recovery.

Virtual Disks By Group

Reports basic information for virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, host, virtual disk group, and virtual disk type (standard, snapshots, and/or rollbacks). Results are organized by Virtual Disk Group. Group information consists of total capacity (size), allocated space and reserved space for the group, Virtual disk information includes size, allocated space, reserved space, type,storage sources, storage profile, and replication partner.

Virtual Disks By Host

Reports basic information for served virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, host, and virtual disk type (standard, snapshots, and/or rollbacks). Results are grouped by host. Virtual disk information includes size, allocated space, type, preferred servers, storage profile, replication status, and data status. Data status includes the percentage complete and type of recovery if the virtual disk is in recovery.

Virtual Disks By Host Port

Reports basic information for served virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, host, and virtual disk type (standard, snapshots, and/or rollbacks). Results are grouped by host port. Virtual disk information includes size, allocated space, type, storage sources, storage profile, replication status, and data status. Data status includes the percentage complete and type of recovery if the virtual disk is in recovery.

Virtual Disks By Path

Reports basic front-end and mirror path information for virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, path type (front-end and/or mirror), host, served or served/unserved virtual disks, and virtual disk type (standard, snapshots, and/or rollbacks). Results are grouped by front-end and mirror paths. Virtual disk information includes size, allocated space, type, storage sources, storage profile, LUN, and data status. Data status includes the percentage complete and type of recovery if the virtual disk is in recovery.

Virtual Disks By Pool

Reports basic information for virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, host, virtual disk group, served or served/unserved virtual disks, virtual disk type (standard, snapshots, and/or rollbacks), and disk pool. Results are grouped by disk pool. Virtual disk information includes size, allocated space, type, storage sources, storage profile, replication status, and data status. Data status includes the percentage complete and type of recovery if the virtual disk is in recovery.

Virtual Disks By Server

Reports basic information for virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, host, served or served/unserved virtual disks, and virtual disk type (standard, snapshots, and/or rollbacks). Results are grouped by server. Virtual disk information includes size, allocated space, type, storage sources, storage profile, replication status, and data status. Data status includes the percentage complete and type of recovery if the virtual disk is in recovery.

Virtual Disks By Server Port

Reports basic information for virtual disks in the local server group. Data can be filtered by server, host, served or served/unserved virtual disks, and virtual disk type (standard, snapshots, and/or rollbacks). Results are grouped by server port. Virtual disk information includes size, allocated space, type, storage sources, storage profile, replication status, and data status. Data status includes the percentage complete and type of recovery if the virtual disk is in recovery.

Creating Reports

To create a report:

  1. In the Ribbon>Home tab, click the Reports in the Diagnostics section. The Report tool will open.
  2. Click Create Report to open the wizard.
  3. In Report type box, click on the down arrow and select the report type from the pull-down list. The report description will be displayed.
  4. In Name, a default report name will be displayed. Change the default report name (with a maximum of 30 characters) and enter a description if desired.
  5. In the Sorting area, select the criteria to sort on and select either Ascending or Descending order.
  6. In the Filtering area, select the parameters in order to narrow the scope of the data in the report.
  7. Click Finish. The report will be displayed and a slide is provided in the lower-right corner to zoom in and out to facilitate viewing. Additional report tool functionality is available in the Report Actions tab in the Ribbon.

Reports can only be viewed, exported, printed, and deleted using the SANsymphony Management Console from which they were created. Export the report for portability.

Exporting Reports

Reports can be exported from the SANsymphony Management Console on the machine that created them. Reports can be exported for use in a variety of formats including PDF, HTML, MHT,

To export a report:

  1. In the Ribbon>Home tab, click the Reports in the Diagnostics section. The Report tool will open.
  2. In the list, double-click the report to export. The report will open.
  3. In the Ribbon>Report Actions tab, click Export To and select the file format.
  4. In the Export Options dialog box, make any necessary selections or entries and click OK.

If the export option is an image, be sure to select the image format.

In the Save As dialog box, select the file name and path to the file and click Save.

Printing Reports

Reports can be printed from the SANsymphony Management Console on the machine that created them.

To print a report:

  1. In the Ribbon>Home tab, click the Reports in the Diagnostics section. The Report tool will open.
  2. In the list, double-click the report to print. The report will open.
  3. In the Ribbon>Report Actions tab, click Print.
  4. In the Print dialog box, make the selections and click Print.

Deleting Reports

Reports can be deleted from the SANsymphony Management Console on the machine that created them.

To delete a report:

  1. In the Ribbon>Home tab, click the Reports in the Diagnostics section. The Report tool will open.
  2. In the list, select the reports to delete and then either right-click and select Delete or click the Delete key.
